Off to a good start…

August 22, 2009

Got to love it.

My father-in-law, Ben, came across this reading the Boston Globe over morning coffee.  Great timing as our family hit the ground in Costa Rica only days ago.  The democracy here is strong, but you should approach this article with some skepticism:  on my first day in Costa Rica 23 years ago I watched Nobel Prize-winning Oscar Arias win an election in which more than 80% of Costa Ricans voted.  Fast forward 20 years later in 2006, Arias wins again, but only 65% of the population votes.  Hmmm.  We’re heading towards a new election in January — can’t say voter turnout is looking up.  So enjoy the article, because in spite of it all, a country at peace, without a army, has a lot to celebrate.
